Preschooler is a Curious George fan. It really began because the only television she watches is PBS, and she became a fan of the show. After that, it evolved into selecting Curious George books from the library, and we’ve now read many, many of both the original (there are actually only seven) and the “in the style of” books that have been adapted by Houghton Mifflin.
And yet with all my background in literature, and all the time I’ve spent reading Curious George with Preschooler, I did not realize that Margaret Rey and H.A. Rey had written anything else other than the stories about that mischievous monkey. And to be honest, as much as I like Rey’s classic style of storytelling, the antics of the original George tend to get on my nerves a little (guilty little secret).
And then this past week I stumbled across Pretzel, by the same husband and wi
fe team.
Oh my.
If you’re a fan of classic children’s stories, see if you can get your hands on this this one. Pretzel, the world’s longest dachshund, has a case of puppy love. But the object of his affections, Greta just “{doesn’t} care for long dogs.” Nothing personal, of course. Despite all his best efforts, it seems like all hope is lost, until one day Pretzel finds himself in a position to help the hard-to-get Greta in a way that only he can.
It’s a puppy love story, with a slight Lady and the Tramp feel, and it trumps any George book as my favorite Rey creation.
